Arsenal goes against Liverpool for French international defender

Arsenal will have to fight Liverpool for the signature of French left-back Eric Abidal according to The Mirror. The Barcelona left-back’s contract will run out next summer and the Catalan club have yet to send an offer Abidal’s way.

The Frenchman’s agent confirmed this and also spoke about interest coming from the English Premier league from some of the top teams. Arsenal and Liverpool are the most likely to chase the defender, but Manchester City or Chelsea could also become interested in Abidal.

The French international joined Barcelona in 2007 from League 1 side Lyon for a transfer fee of £9 million. Now that years have passed over him and he is almost out of contract, he is rated at about the same value.

The 32-year-old is lucky to have played football this long in his career given the liver tumour he was diagnosed with at the start of 2011. Abidal managed to get rid of the disease and came back on the field, and perhaps he now has the chance to restart his career at some other club.
