The question playing on everybody’s lips at the moment is whether the Arsenal skipper Robin Van Persie, called by many RVP, will also be the “MVP” of the season, as he made the cut for the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award.
A total of 34 goals brought Robin within touching distance of a trophy he has never come close to before, as the PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor declared that the Dutchman has reached a whole new level this season.
“He has been amazing. When you think of the players Arsene Wenger has brought to the club – he came from Feyenoord for £2.75million I think and that is incredible really.” Taylor said.
“When you think of (Dennis) Bergkamp, (Ruud) van Nistelrooy, (Marco) van Basten – he is in that mould of absolutely top-class strikers that Holland, quite phenomenally, manages to produce.
“You could pick half a dozen of his goals out for goal of the season.
“Arsenal were struggling for some time but he was a real talisman for them.
“He seems to have lifted the team and got them back believing in themselves again and looking to qualify for the Champions League, giving all the Arsenal fans some hope.”
Robin Van Persie was recently close to beating Shearer’s goal scoring record, and this season he managed to equal Ian Wright’s record, scoring against 17 teams out of a possible 19 in a single Premier League season.
Sure, David Silva, Sergio Aguero and Joe Hart, Scott Parker and Rooney, the rest of those nominated are all top players (well, except Parker of course!), but I think that season Van Persie is on a different level entirely.
