Looking at a possible replacement for their ageing skipper Carles Puyol, Barcelona have now turned their attentions to Arsenal centre-half Thomas Vermaelen after being priced out of a move for AC Milan’s Brazilian defender Thiago Silva.
New Barca manager Tito Vilanova had put Silva on the top of his transfer wish list this summer, but has apparently been priced out of a move for the 27-year old after finding out that the Rossoneri have already turned down a £32.5 million bid for the player from Paris Saint-Germain.
High on his list of alternatives is Vermaelen, with the Catalan club looking to secure a deal for the 26-year old after seeing their attempts to sign Chelsea starlet David Luiz bear no fruit.
The versatile Vermaelen would fit the bill perfectly at Barcelona, with the Catalans expected to explore the possibility of using the Belgian at left back as well.
Vermaelen has, in recent times, suggested that he is happy at the Emirates, but the lure of a move to the Nou Camp could be a proposition too tough to turn down for the Belgian. Arsenal, for their part, are expected to play hardball with the Spanish side, but just like Cesc Fabregas last year, could again have to give up one of their prized assets.
Another player the Blaugrana have been keeping tabs on is Ajax youngster Jan Vertonghen, but the Dutchman is said to be close to agreeing on personal terms with Arsenal’s North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
