It is safe to say that Arsenal did pretty well to “milk out the juice” out of Kolo Toure’s football career before selling him. Arsene Wenger signed the Ivorian defender for just £150,000 back in 2002. He ended up playing over 300 games for the Gunners, helping us to win the Premier League title in 2004 along with two FA cups. Arsenal definitely got his best years out of him and sold him at the right time to Manchester City for £15 million.
The time at City was not so successful for Toure, and he slipped down the pecking order before joining Liverpool this summer. Whereas most people would think that was a backward step in his career, the Ivorian international seems to think he has joined a club that is going places, because he has advised Luis Suarez to stay at Anfield rather than move to the Emirates in order to have more chance of silverware.
He said, “Luis Suarez does not need to leave to fulfil his ambitions. If he stays here he will have more chances to win trophies.”
He will certainly have more chance of winning the Europa League if he stays at Liverpool, because none of the clubs interested in him are in the competition, but that is exactly why Suarez wants to move. I doubt that he is really that bothered by the English media, specifically, because the Spanish media is probably even more intrusive.
What Suarez wants is to play at a top club in the Champions League. I fully expect him to go to Real Madrid, now that the Spanish giants are definitely interested, but if not he would rather play for Arsenal in the Champions League than Liverpool. Sorry Kolo, but that’s the truth.
