Aaron Ramsey – Arsenal’s Rising Star

Aaron Ramsey

Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey has been one of the standout players in the Premiership over the opening three months and already looks like a contender for player of the season. It’s been a long road back to form for the young midfielder after suffering a terrible leg injury in early 2010 but he now looks better than ever.

Before the season started, Ramsey’s position in the Arsenal line-up was far from certain, to the point that he was even being rumoured to be transferring to his former club, Cardiff. While this might have simply been the media circus of the transfer window, it is indicative of a lack of faith in his ability to be a consistent performer at the top of the Premier League. Once the season started, however, he quickly silenced his critics.

Not usually thought of as an attack minded midfielder, Ramsey had never scored more than 3 league goals in a season. Astoundingly, he has already scored 8 in 13 league matches and 5 in 7 Champions League games. His ability to control the ball in tight areas allows him to quickly work his way into the box but he has also scored some spectacular goals from the edge of the penalty area.

Ramsey’s contribution is far more significant than just his newfound goals, serving as the core of Arsenal’s play on the pitch, with almost every series of passing now focused through him. Both he and Mesut Özil are excellent playmakers and Olivier Giroud’s improvement this season can be at least partly attributed to the precise service he is receiving from the quality midfield behind him. Playing with a lone striker has been a viable tactic for Arsenal this season largely thanks to Ramsey’s ability to receive the ball from Giroud and storm into the box. After 13 weeks in EPL Arsenal football betting odds are going down and those placed their bets from the very beginning seems to receive promising return at the end of the season.

Cardiff City felt the full impact that their former trainee and player can have on a match this weekend, when Ramsey put two goals past David Marshall to extend Arsenal’s lead at the top of the table to 7 points. He opened the scoring after heading home a ball from Özil and refused to celebrate against his former team, earning him a respectful round of applause from the Bluebirds faithful.

His second goal, a vicious strike, was greeted with a similar reaction and Ramsey was reluctant to enjoy his stellar afternoon of football. With the current threat he poses to teams, he is unlikely to face many warm receptions at away grounds during the remainder of the season.

The key for Ramsey, amazingly just 22 despite all the difficulties he has already faced in his career, will be maintaining this level for the rest of the year and into the future. If he can continue to play so well or maybe even improving, given his age, he can establish himself as a genuinely world class player. With the addition of Özil to Arsenal’s increasingly strong team, Ramsey achieve very special things at the London club. As things stand, they’re on course to win their first Premiership trophy in a decade.
