Arsenal’s foe in tonight’s Champions League clash Napoli seem determined to break Arsenal’s hearts not only in the Champions League but also by stealing one of the Gunners’ key defenders Bacary Sagna. The Frenchman has been embroiled in contractual impasse with Arsenal and reports are rife that he could be exiting the Emirates as a free agent in the summer. French top club Monaco, PSG have been linked with a move for him but it seems the Italian big spenders have also joined the race for him.
Italian football transfer expert Gianluca di Marzio claims Sagna is already in contact with two clubs. He told Radio Matre, reported by TuttoMercatoWeb:
“His advisors have contacts with both AC Milan and Napoli both and the future for the defender remains to be seen.”
He added he did not expect any transfer to be done in January but is Sagna likely to make his decision as a free agent.
Interesting situation as regards Sagna’s future while I won’t be surprised to see him leave Arsenal in the summer, I doubt if he would be allowed to leave in the winter window. Arsenal seem to have prioritized glory over profit these days and letting go of a key mainstay in the defence could cost the Gunners dear in their pursuit of glory this season. If Arsenal could let Pires go for free, they could as well allow Sagna leave for free in the summer provided he remains committed and that is something he has shown so far this season.
As for their other dream of ousting Arsenal from the Champions League, they have their work cut out. They will be lucky to beat Arsenal but a 3 goals difference in victory is very unlikely. Wenger might rest players but he will send a strong enough squad out knowing what is at stake. The fact that Arsenal only need a draw while Napoli need an outright convincing win to make it through means they will have to attack Arsenal and that would make them vulnerable to Arsenal’s counter attacks.
