Reports are rife that Basel are resigned to losing star defender Fabian Schar in the winter window.
The Daily Mail in it’s reports said that Schar has attracted attention from North London with Arsenal and Tottenham interested coupled with German interest from Borussia Dortmund.
Basle were initially reluctant to sanction the sale of the 21-year-old as early as January but they might just be ready to cash in now that there are strong interests in him. The Swiss club might just be about to set the stage for a bidding war amongst the interested parties.
It would be great if Arsenal can win the war as the youngster would be a decent replacement for likely to leave Bacary Sagna. With the Frenchman yet to agree a deal, he could be leaving in the summer as I doubt if Wenger would be willing to sell him for profit in January. With just 6 months left on his contract and at his age, Arsenal cannot get more than 3 million Pounds which is paltry compared with what they would gain in prize money if they win the Premier League. Certainly, Sagna is key to that title charge.
Schar is versatile as he can play centre-back and right back, that makes him a good back-up for Mertesacker and Koscielny while also stepping into Sagna’s shoes should he leave or challenging him should he decide to stay.
To win the race, Arsenal might have to present more suitable options most likely loaning him back to the Swiss club. That won’t be a bad idea as it would help him continue his football development and also allow Basel ample time to get a replacement. That might be key to pipping the others in the race fot him.
