Arsenal’s search for a new striker continues. Wenger searched for a new striker in the summer but failed in his pursuit of Jovetic, Higuain and Suarez. The Gunners have started the season well with Giroud particularly been in good form but after the outcome of the last three matches, Wenger’s resolve to get a new striker seems to have been strengthened.
The Gunners have failed to win any of the last three matches in all competitions. While the draw against Everton and loss to Napoli wasn’t so painful, the loss to City really outlined why Arsenal needed to get another striker.
While City got chances which they buried in ruthless fashion, Arsenal were guilty of spurning some of the good ones they got. The match finished 6-3 but had Arsenal’s attack been any sharper, it could have finished 6-6 or even 7-6 in Arsenal’s favour. Wenger alluded to that in his post-match conference.
To this end, he has been scouring the market for an alternative and Diego Costa’s form has caught the eye as he has bagged an impressive nineteen goals in twenty appearances in all competitions so far for the Spanish outfit. It has been mooted that Costa would be sold next summer when a £20m release clause could be activated but reports are now suggesting that Wenger will offer more money next month to ensure they pip a host of other big-name clubs to his signature.
Should this be true, it will be a huge boost. Wenger is no doubt a big fan of the Brazilian cum Spanish international. Should Arsenal sign him in the winter window, he won’t be eligible to play for the Gunners in the knockout phase of the Champions League but he might just be that extra firepower that the Gunners need to win the Premier League.
