He was one of Wenger’s top summer transfer targets but Wolfsburg beat the Gunners to him and Arsenal have since gone on to beef up the midfield with the acquisition of Flamini and Ozil. But the Gunners could have another bite at the cherry if they are ready to take the chance as the Brazilian enforcer has declared his readiness to leave his current employers if the chance presents itself.
“It’s always good to have your name linked to Barcelona,” He told Globo Esporte.
“This is the third time there has been interest from them.
“I have a long contract which includes a buyout fee, and if anyone wants to pay that, they can sign me.”
Apparently, he is ready to leave provided his buy-out clause is met. If the fee is not more than £20m, it would be a worthy investment for Arsenal in the winter window. Gustavo is a very versatile player as he can play as defensive midfielder, center back and left back. With Ramsey’s injury and the fact that we have just a natural defensive midfielder means we could make do with another one.
Besides, the fact that Yaya Toure bullied our central midfield when Arsenal played City means we are still a bit light-weight. We might have steel but we need height, Flamini and Arteta are not the tallest around. A player of Gustavo’s stature would have stood toe to tow with Toure.
Finally, the fact that he is eligible to play in the knockout stages of the Champions League makes him an attractive proposition. But if Arsenal are still interested then they should be prepared to slug it out with Barca for his services. If Gustavo is really keen on regular football, he should opt for Arsenal as his chances of displacing Busquets in the current Barca set up is extremely slim unless he wants to play at centre-back.
