Arsenal and Sagna are still yet to reach a compromise over the lingering contract situation. After loosing Nasri, Clichy and Van Persie to contract conundrum, the Gunners might be loosing another of their experienced and dependable players.
To prevent a situation where they would be caught unawares with Sagna leaving and there is no replacement in the pipeline, the Gunners are drawing up a long list of potential replacements according to reports. In the past, Arsenal have been linked with AC Milan’s right back Ignatio Abate but another Serie A star has been added to the list as according to TalkSport, Arsenal have revived their interest in Udinese’s right-back Dusan Basta.
Arsenal were said to be interested in Basta last season but the Serie A side refused to sanction his sale, but it is now believed they are open to entertaining offers for the £7m-rated Serbia international at the end of the season.
The Gunners are not the only side monitoring the former Red Star Belgrade defender as Inter – under new ownership – seek his talents. While Basta might be a good fall back option, I believe Arsenal’s priority should be keeping Sagna and it seems Wenger is also thinking along the line. If the Gunners hierarchy have shifted grounds over the length of contract from one year to 2 1/2 years then they mean business and can as well shift ground on the issue of increased wages.
Whether or not Sagna stays could be dependent on Arsenal winning the EPL this season. If the Gunners are crowned EPL champions, the French full back might see the Gunners as a team that has finally reached the top and is set to rub shoulders with the best and if he wants to be the best, stay with the best and rub shoulders with the best.
To this end, Sagna contract talks could get down to the wire but Arsenal will do well to keep their options open so as not to be caught napping.
