According to talksport, Italian sports program Rai TV have today claimed that Arsenal are looking into the possibility of signing Roma’s Italian forward Mattia Destro. It has been reported that the Gunners have made contact with the player’s agent, Claudio Vigarelli despite Roma’s reluctance to sell the twenty two year old.
Arsenal have been all too dependent on Olivier Giroud this season and the burden of leading the Arsenal front line seems to be getting to the Frenchman with his performances declining off late. The weight of the burden has probably been intensified in recent weeks with injuries to Theo Walcott and Nicklas Bendtner, forcing Wenger to look for options in the transfer market.
Destro has made four appearances for Roma this season (two of which have come from the bench) scoring three goals in the process. He has four caps for the Azzurri and is highly thought of in Italy as the star of the future. Though, concerns remain over his fitness which has been an issue from time.
It is not unforeseeable for Wenger to enter the market for a youngster and entrust with him the responsibility of a title charge but this remains highly improbable mainly due to Roma’s own involvement in the title race this season. Roma’s title prospects look grim despite only one loss this season but they will be unwilling to raise the white flag as yet by selling their best and most promising players.
