Arsenal are planning an audacious swoop on rivals Liverpool. The Gunners tried to decimate the Reds’ rank in the summer with a move for striker Luis Suarez but the Anfield giants stood firm, declining to sell their prolific hitman. Now, Wenger has turned attention to their full back Glen Johnson. Just like Arsenal’s dilemma with Sagna over a new contract, Liverpool are also embroiled in a contractual face-off with Johnson. The 29-year-old’s current contract runs out in 2015 and he has been told he must accept a pay cut if he is to get a new deal with Liverpool. That has seen talks stall and Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is monitoring the England international’s situation.
According to Talksport, Wenger is a long-term admirer of the former Chelsea and Portsmouth defender and, with Arsenal and France international Bacary set to become a free agent by June after refusing to sign a new contract with the gunners, is considering making a bid for Johnson which he hopes will be accepted by the Anfield lords.
Johnson is a decent player though not in the same defensive class as Sagna. The plus the candidacy of Johnson brings is his versatility as he can play both on the right and left fullback positions but it isn’t a smart move to want to replace Sagna with Johnson. Johnson isn’t as good as the Frenchman defensively while he is also getting old which means he isn’t a long term solution. The fact that he is more injury prone makes him a bad option. Already, we have Diaby and Sanogo who are injury prone, we cannot afford to add to them.
