Arsenal have been received a boost in their pursuit of Lyon’s captain Maxime Gonalons according to daily mirror. The Frenchman was Wenger’s target in the summer as he looked to add steel to the Gunners’ erstwhile brittle midfield but the French giants dug in their heels, maintaining their captain wasn’t for sale and Wenger has since settled for former Gunner and compatriot Mathieu Flamini who arrived on a Bossman transfer.
Arsenal might have looked in another direction but Gonalons remained a beautiful bride to Europe’s top teams and recently Napoli made a move for him but yet again Lyon rejected their £14m bid. Apparently, the French giants aren’t willing to let go of an integral part of the team mid-season as he has already notched up twenty two appearances for them.
According to Sunday Mirror, rejecting Napoli is a blessing for Arsenal as it leaves the Gunners well poised to pounce should he still be available in the summer. Arsenal might have Flamini and Arteta but can still make do with another defensive midfielder considering the fact that Arteta is already in his thirties, while Flamini is inching closer to it. Diaby who is the other defensive midfielder is too injury prone to be considered an option that can be counted on. To this end, if Gonalons is available for a reasonable fee, it is a no brainer that we should take it.
