It is no longer news that Arsenal are in the need of a new striker after injuries to Bendtner for a while and Walcott for the remainder of the season. Without those injuries, getting a new striker was pertinent as Giroud was the only one carrying the burden of goalscoring and seem to be crumbling under the weight of it but injuries to Bendtner and Walcott have made the move for a striker one of utmost importance.
To this end, many names have been penned down as possible targets from Costa to Martinez, but it seems Arsenal’s chances of getting the Spaniard this winter window is extremely remote. This is not because his buyout clause is out of Arsenal’s reach but because convincing him to swap the La Liga, where Athletico Madrid are pulling their weight, for the Premier League mid season might prove too steep.
That has forced Arsenal to turn their attention to another of their target Jackson Martinez with reports in A Bola claiming they are ready to trigger his Porto’s release clause which stands at £33m. With Porto out of the Champions League, selling Martinez mid-season won’t be totally bad for Porto and it shouldn’t require much convincing before he opts to join Arsenal as he has previously revealed his love for the Gunners.
Martinez will be a good buy as he can play as a lone striker and also on the wings owing to his pace and skill. He would prove a good foil for Giroud while also doubling as a replacement for Walcott. The great thing is that Chelsea do not seem to be interested in him again. After buying Matic for 35 million Euros, I just can’t see Chelsea spending another £33m ( about 50m Euros ) on Jackson Martinez which clears the way for us to sign him.
