The fact that Arsenal are interested in signing high rated Germany and Schalke 04’s twenty year old attacker Julian Draxler is an open secret. Arsenal was seriously linked to the player in the summer transfer window with some reports claiming we actually bid £40m for him which was rejected. Fast forward five months and the DailyMail in an exclusive are claiming that Arsenal are set to offer £37 million for Schalke’s Draxler despite his injury blow.
They also claim that Draxler is suffering from a ruptured tendon which will keep him out until March. The veracity of both these claims is up for debate. The first is most obviously not an exclusive. It has been reported over a million times in the past week alone. The second is also not true as Schalke have revealed that Draxler is due back in training this week and will be available when Bundesliga restarts.
This Draxler story looks set to continue till the deadline day as contradicting reports keep emerging. The latest in a line of which, states that Schalke are trying to flog Draxler and will look to replace him by re-signing Lewis Holtby from Tottenham.
Arsenal fans are used to rumors stretching out like this and will be less anxious about it this window owing to the team’s brilliant performance this season however, it remains to be seen if the press get tired of repeating the same stories day in and day out.
Although Draxler is to a striker and Arsenal desperately need addition upfront, it is however been reported that Wenger sees him as a potential centre forward. This is not uncommon with Wenger as he did the same thing to RVP and Henry both of who were Wingers before they came to Arsenal but ended up playing upfront and doing well there.
