Arsenal are preparing their third contract offer for right back Bacary Sagna after their two previous advances were rejected.
Arsenal will be hoping that it is third time lucky for them as they head into negotiation with the French defender. The Daily Mail have reported that Sagna is holding out for a three year contract and an increase in his wages which have remained the same since 2008 despite courtship from the likes of Manchester City and Real Madrid.
Sagna was bought as a relatively unknown from Auxerre in 2007 and in those seven years, he has established himself as one of the best right backs in the world and perhaps the most consistent one. He is a key member of the Arsenal team and has been identified as one of the reasons to Arsenal’s superb defensive record this season.
He currently has only six months remaining on his contract and is free to discuss a new contract with other teams on a Bosman but Arsenal will be keen to not let it happen and instead, extend his stay with the club.
Sagna is currently bordering on thirty-one and Arsenal’s contract policy doesn’t entertain big contracts for those over thirty. But an exception will have to be made. Arsenal have found a stability and maturity in this team that has been found wanting on previous occasions and this transformation is due to the experience of players like Sagna who have spent a lot of time in the game and at the club. He has been loyal to the club so far by rejecting chances to head off to bigger and richer clubs and he probably would like to be rewarded for it as he knows this is his last pay day.
There is known to be interest from teams like Galatasaray, Monaco and PSG and they would certainly love to double his wages should he be willing to join them but he has allowed time for Arsenal to negotiate a better contract for him and Arsenal should look to capitalise on it.
