Kim Kallstrom is back in training and the surprising thing is not one Arsenal fan cares. Kallstrom’s move to Arsenal in the dying hours of the January window drew a lot of flak from everyone not just because he is a player who is well past his peak but also because he was brought in the squad to provide cover for the injured Ramsey while being injured himself and out for the same duration as the Welshman.
However, the mirror are reporting that Kallstrom is back in training but is not expected to be in the squad for Everton. The game against Spurs is a more likely date for his return but this isn’t going to please anyone as such and perhaps highlights Arsenal’s incompetence in the transfer market with a shade of the darkest indelible markers.
Kallstrom hasn’t featured in a training session until recently, much less any actual competitive game and his return is pencilled in for the same date the player he was supposed to cover for returns. The Arsenal executives will have to justify what this transfer achieved. By the end of the season Arsenal would have spent a substantial amount on his wages and he is unlikely to have any effect on the team to justify the investment. For a club that prides itself on its austerity, it comes across as a very stupid move.
Even if Kallstrom does manage to get any game time, it has to be noted that he is not the same player he was. While at one time he was considered an influential figure at Lyon, he is now a shadow of the player he once was. Add to that he has absolutely no experience in the Premier League which is sure to delight Arsenal’s rivals.
As the season draws to a close Arsenal’s chances of getting the title seem to diminish with every passing match. Wenger will have to look at the opportunities he had in the January window and perhaps accept that he put his eggs in the wrong basket.
