According to reports in the Guardian, Arsenal are in talks to sign a Portuguese starlet from Benfica. He is Goncalo Guedes that has been dubbed the new Cristiano Ronaldo.
Arsenal could have had the real Cristiano playing for them had Wenger not dragged in his heels over some paltry sum as according to reports, Ronaldo visited the Emirates as a teenager with the hope of agreeing a deal but Arsenal couldn’t and he didn’t sign. At the end, he teemed up Premier League rivals Manchester United and the rest is history.
Now, Arsenal seem to have found another Cristiano Ronaldo in Guedes with key scout Gilles Grimandi warning Wenger not to let the opportunity to sign the talented youngster slip through his fingers.
At just 17, Guedes’ profile looks interesting has he has played for Portugal at three different levels of international football; under-16, under-17 and under-18 level. His versatility is also synonymous to that of Ronaldo as he could play on the wings where Ronaldo started from and as a second striker, which is where he plays now. It is a known fact that Wenger likes his players versatile.
Benfica aren’t willing to let go of Guedes without a fight and are trying to get him to sign a new contract with a buy-out clause all in a bid to fend off interests from other top clubs that include AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund.
But I guess the lure of been fast tracked into the first team at a bigger club like Arsenal and playing in the Premier League (following in the footsteps of his idol) could just see Arsenal clinch the deal.
