Why Arsenal Should Try To Beat Chelsea To The Signing Of This La Liga Star

Arsenal are in the market primarily for a striker, defensive midfielder and a right back in the eventuality of Sagna’s exit but they might have to consider a centre back too should captain Thomas Vermaelen leave in the summer in search of a regular first team football.

The Gunners have been linked with a move for German highly rated center back Mathias Ginter but it looks like the German could be moving to another Bundesliga side Borrusia Dortmund and that means Arsenal have to keep looking.

Suddenly, there seems to be a bigger fish for Arsenal to fry. According to reports, French centre back Raphael Varane could be set to leave Real Madrid in the summer no thanks to the reduced first team role this season. He was a big revelation during Mourinho’s reign at Los Blancos but Ancelotti’s arrival has seen Varane drop down the pecking order as the partnership of Ramos and Pepe seems preferred by the Italian boss.

That gives Arsenal a chance of prising him away either on loan or permanently. I believe the lure of regular first team football would see him open to Arsenal move. Also, he knows that Wenger was in for him before he sealed a switch to Real Madrid and Le Prof might just be successful at the second point of asking.

Varane would be a better replacement for Vermaelen should the Belgian decide to leave. He is younger and more subtle in his tackles. With Mertesacker aging already, he could prove to be the long term replacement of the towering German.

Getting Varane won’t be easy though as his former manager Jose Mourinho has also been touted to be interested in luring his former player to Stamford Bridge as a long term replacement for John Terry. Chelsea might be loosing a defender as reports have it that David Luiz could be moving to Barcelona and that means Mourinho would be out to bring in a replacement.

If Arsenal are serious about getting Varane, they must move fast. Hopefully, Real might see Arsenal as a lesser evil than their former manager and sanction Varane’s sale to them.
