After missing out on Swiss striker Josip Drmic after reports emerged that he had sealed a move to another Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen, Arsenal’s transfer options have been hugely decimated and are now left with French strikers Karim Benzema, Loic Remy, Croatian striker Mario Mandzukic and Columbian hitman Jackson Martinez.
It seems Wenger is keen on a French striker and that means either of Remy or Benzema might be arriving at the Emirates in the summer. Real Madrid are ready to let go the former Lyon striker to fund a big money move for Liverpool’s striker Luis Suarez. That brings the big question, who should arrive between Remy and Benzema?
Besides the fact that Remy would be a lot cheaper to buy since reports claim he could be available for a fee between 8-11million Pounds and he is already keen to move to Arsenal where he can play Champions League football and also follow in the footsteps of hero Thierry henry. Benzema would cost much more. if Real Madrid are planning to sell him to fund a move for Suarez, it means his asking price would be high. Liverpool rates Suarez in the 70 million Pounds bracket especially after a very successful season in the Premier League, Real would want to sell Benzema for at least 40 million Pounds. Wenger might have been promised a huge transfer kitty but 40 million Pounds off it would see it hugely pummeled and considering the fact that there are still other holes to plug, it might not be a smart move. I would pick Remy. He might not be as high profile as Benzema but he possesses a talent that could see him thrive at a club like Arsenal.
Another reason is versatility. Benzema can only play in one position and that is a striker through the center. That puts him in direct competition with current main striker and Frenchman Olivier Giroud. Both men are also competing for the same spot in Les Bleus and that could result in unhealthy rivalry between both men and could rupture the harmony in the dressing room. This is unlike what we could experience with Remy. He is a French striker but unlike Benzema, besides playing as a central striker, he could also play on the wings as a winger. That means he could compete with Giroud thereby keeping him on his toes while he could also play on the wings there by complimenting him. Having both men on the field at the same time can only make Arsenal’s attack stronger. Remy could provide a different alternative to Walcott. He would offer Walcott’s pace as well as more strength since he is stronger than the English winger.
Benzema’s ego could rupture Arsenal’s team spirit. Unlike Remy that would see playing for Arsenal as a priviledge and would be ready to fight for a place in the team. That is unlike Benzema that would expect to walk straight into the first team because he is coming from Real Madrid. Wenger should chose carefully, one could strengthen us while the other could cause ripples.
