Why Arsenal Should Sign Premier League Star

With the vacuum created by the departure of Lukasz Fabianski to Swansea City, Arsenal will no doubt have to sign another goalkeeper to provide competition for current number one Wojciech Szczesny. One keeper that could provide the Polish short stopper with that kind of competition is none other than Manchester City’s Costel Pantilimon.

The 27 year old Romanian was number two to England number one goalkeeper Joe Hart at City in the just concluded football season. By the virtue of his release by Manchester United, he is available on a free transfer and could provide real competition for our goalkeeper. Pantilimon only made eight appearances last season, and may not be a bad signing for us should Wenger go all out to and sign him.

Eight appearances all season is not encouraging for a goalkeeper and joining Arsenal could double that figure with regular appearances in the FA CUP and other competitions. There is no doubting the fact that a vacuum exist in the goalkeeping section of Arsenal and there is no doubt that Pantilimon can fill the gap.

Besides, the 27 year old is also available on a free transfer and he is unlikely to command jumbo wages. Wenger likes his players cheap and Pantilimon on a free transfer and on cheap wage ( compared to Fabianksi who just left the club ) won’t be a bad idea. The great thing is he already have some experience in the Premier League.

What may however count against him is the rumour surrounding the club’s interest in promoting from within. Rumours have circulated that the club intends to promote Martinez as the number two to Szczesny, but that of course, is yet to be confirmed.

Another disadvantage working against signing the 27 year old Romanian is in his weakness when it comes to catching crosses. This could be one of the reasons why managers after managers in City always prefer Joe Hart as the number one goalkeeper. Having seen him played a couple of times ( especially against us in the FA cup years ago ), I think he has got what it takes to succeed with us.

He will still be a second choice goalie with us but unlike with Manchester City we will give him ample game time in the goal games and in some EPL games.

What do you think? Do you see us signing Pantilimon? Do you think he can provide the needed competition and cover for Szczesny?
