The normal cliché that holds sways in football circles is that it is easy for a successful clubs to hold on to their players. True as that may be, there are however instances where there is an exception. Which brings the case of the contract dispute between Toni Kroos and Bayern Munich into focus. The German International has rejected the contract that the Bavarians have so far put forward to him. And with his contract due to expire in 2015, the Bavarian giants could be forced to resolve the situation before he becomes a free agent. His contract situation has alerted other clubs in Europe, which includes European giants Real Madrid. He has also been linked to Chelsea.
The possible pursuit of the 24 year old German midfielder by the European Champions has thrown the position of Sami Khedira into question at the Santiago Bernabeu. The Tunisian born German midfielder spent more than half of last season on the sidelines after he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in November 2013. His sparse contribution to Real Madrid’s successful season has increased the possibility of him being replaced by Toni Kroos at the middle of the park.
This turn of event has brought Arsenal into the picture, the gunners now have the chance of bringing in the 27 year old German at the base of Arsenal’s midfield. He has been linked to Arsenal in the past. And with the chances of Toni Kroos leaving the Allianz Arena as a result of his ongoing contract dispute increasing every day, there is a chance that there could be a domino effect should the Golden ball winner of the 2007 Under 17 World Cup decides not to renew his contract.
It will be interesting to see what Bayern Munich decides to do in this regard as Toni Kroos only has just one year to run on his current contract. Other key squad members of the Bavarian giants have already extended their various contracts particularly captain Philipp Lahm and Jerome Boateng. The player who assisted Germany’s second goal in his side’s 4 nil victory over Portugal has however refused to put pen to paper.
Arsenal’s outlook for a player to play in it defensive midfield role has made it increasingly likely that Sami Khedira could join his German colleagues at the Emirates if Toni Kroos moves to Real Madrid. Although, the transfer window is just starting to heat up, as countries bow out of the World Cup, there is a chance that a transfer manoeuvre akin to Mezut Ozil’s move to the Emirates last season could be in the offing, if Toni Kroos moves to the Spanish capital. It’s a case of watch this space as the intrigue of the transfer window begins to unfold.
