The wind of the transfer window has blown in different directions for the club’s fan over the past few weeks with the excitement building as the rumours, speculations and impending signings reaches overdrive. So far, only Alexis Sanchez’s transfer has been announced, but that could change soon as according to reports, we already signed Mathieu Debuchy. But the speculation on players not yet signed continues.
A position that has left many fans scratching their heads over is the holding midfield. It is a position that has been an albatross to the club’s fortune in recent seasons. As a result, the likes of Morgan Schneiderlin, Luis Gustavo, Sami Khedira and Lars Bender have been linked to the club throughout this summer.
The Southampton defensive midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin has drawn particular interest from Arsenal because of his stellar performance at the South Coast club. However, the price tag of 25 million pounds slammed on him by those at the St. Marys only means they are scaring other clubs away from coming in for the midfielder.
Which is not a surprise as the club is not under any pressure to sell after banking in 60 million pounds from the sales of Luke Shaw, Ricky Lambert and Adam Lallana.
Going by the way Arsene Wenger operates, he is unlikely to sanction a bid of 25 million pounds for the Saints midfielder. As that is way on the high side for Morgan Schneiderlin. Although, some within the corridors of St. Marys may see the valuation of the player in a different light as valuation always differs in the eyes of both buying and selling clubs.
The Saints midfielder has been at the St. Marys since 2008 making the step up from the lower leagues to the Premier League where he has spent two seasons marshalling the midfield. He came of age in his first season in the Premier League and built on that last season by building a reputation as a midfielder who is adept at interceptions, blocks with a wide range of passing.
One key attribute he has over all the players that have been linked to the club is, that he knows the Premier League so well, something the likes of Lars Bender and Luis Gustavo would have to adapt to.
However, for the price being touted about by Southampton, he becomes a no go area for Arsenal for that sum. The club would be in a better position to settle for Lars Bender or Luis Gustavo for the experience they will bring to the team. They both are international midfielders who have featured in the Champions League and for their national team consistently. That experience in a big game and in a pressurized environment is an area that Morgan Schneiderlin is still lacking.
With the sum of 25 million pounds, Arsene Wenger would rather seek an international midfielder and with other areas of the squad in need of strengthening, it’s unlikely he would spend that sum for the Saints’ player.
