Arsenal search for a goalkeeper that will be a backup to Wojciech Szczesny has seen several goalkeepers linked to the club which includes the likes of Spanish legend Iker Casillas and David Marshall of Cardiff. So far nothing concrete has developed from the goalkeeper’s front since the departure of Lukas Fabianski to Swansea in early June.
However, reports have now emerged that Arsenal are close to signing Colombian goalkeeper David Ospina. The Nice goalkeeper had a stellar World Cup for his country marshaling the post for the Colombians before they fell at the quarter final hurdle at the hands of host nation Brazil. The link of the Nice of France goalkeeper raises some series of questions as regards the goalkeeping situation at Arsenal.
The Colombian goalkeeper is just 25 years old, while Wojciech Szczesny is one year younger at 24. Bringing in someone so young in goalkeeper terms only means Arsene Wenger is likely giving an opportunity for both goalkeepers to fight it out to see who the established first choice becomes. Though this is doubtful. Or in the alternative, the Frenchman is trying to create a competitive atmosphere at the club that will keep Wojciech Szczesny on his toes.
Although, reports in South America claims that Arsenal have been in touch with David Ospina, it is difficult to ascertain whether a first choice goalkeeper who made 29 appearances in Ligue 1 last season will swap the French league to become a second choice goalkeeper at Arsenal especially coming on the back of a good World Cup in Brazil.
Another factor that should be considered in respect of this link is the height of the goalkeeper. At just 6ft is a bit on the short side for a goalkeeper in the Premier League, with Wojciech Szczesny standing at 6ft 5in. The Colombian goalkeeper might be susceptible to dealing with long balls and crosses into the area from opposition teams. Even the departed Lukas Fabianski who was the second choice last season stood at 6ft 3in. Also, Damian Martinez who is the other goalkeeper in Arsenal’s first team stands at 6ft 4in, and at just 21 year is at infancy in goalkeeper terms.
Furthermore, bringing the Argentine Damian Martinez into the picture, it represents something of a surprise that Arsene Wenger would go for David Ospina who is 25. Meaning the club would have three goalkeepers in their early twenties in it squad. This means, that Damian Martinez’s path to a first team picture would be difficult.
In a nutshell, it might be better for the club to go for a more experience goalkeeper that might be a mentor to first choice Wojciech Szczesny. The picture will be even clearer as the summer develops.
