After wrapping up the signing of Barcelona winger Alexis Sanchez, Arsenal‘s attack look stronger though they could still make do with another central striker but in the interim, the Gunners have turned their attention to strengthening the defensive angle of the midfield. To this end, the Gunners have weighed up a move for Real Madrid German midfielder Sami Khedira. Chances are rife that Khedira could be leaving the Champions League winners this summer after rejecting a new contract offer from them. Arsenal look favourites to clinch his signature as the Gunners have already submitted an official bid for him but as usual, Chelsea are playing the fox ready to spoil Arsenal’s vine.
According to reports, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is ready to play the spoiler by making a move for Khedira too. Does he need him after signing Fabregas to join the lot of Matic, Ramires and Oscar? I will say no, but then Chelsea is known for signing players not for necessity but instead to ruin the chances of other teams.
Should it end up been a straight battle between Arsenal and Chelsea, Khedira I believe is likely choose a move to North London ahead of West London. Arsenal has a budding colony of German players (Podolski, Ozil, Mertesacker and Gnabry); certainly, Khedira would feel at home playing amongst his German mates unlike at Chelsea where there is only one German in the squad (Shurrle).
Another key reason is his friendship with Ozil. Not only are there Germans at Arsenal, his best friend is amongst them. Recently, he affirmed his desire to play with Ozil at Arsenal. Chelsea might have a German in their ranks but the fact that two players come from the same country doesn’t mean they are best of friends. Van Persie and Huntelaar are Dutch men but there is no love lost between them. The presence of Van Persie at Arsenal was one reason Huntelaar never gave a thought to signing for the Gunners. While Van Persie once urged Wenger to sign Van Der Vaart, he never gave good words about Huntelaar despite his compatriot been a decent striker.
Finally, the issue of regular first team football; one of the reasons why Khedira is eying the exit door at the Bernabeu, is the lack of regular first team football. He has already fallen down the pecking order behind Alonso and Modric. Any club he would be moving to, he would want a guaranteed place in the first team. Chances are rife that he could get that at Arsenal but the same cannot be said of Chelsea. With Fabregas in their fold already, battle for places in the midfield will be tough. I believe Mourinho isn’t gunning for him because he needs him rather he wants to buy him just to prevent Arsenal from doing so. He wants to do Shawn Wright Philips for Khedira.
The ball is in Khedira’s court, hope he plays it well.
