The summer transfer window assumes different paths as the rumour mills reaches different levels as fans flocks to reach out for the next available information on any speculation linking players to the club. Arsenal is always the subject of several links to different players. Not surprising one of the key players at the World Cup has been linked to the club.
According to Spanish journalist Oriol Domènech, Arsenal is amongst major clubs in Europe interested in Dutch and Ajax player Daley Blind, the 24 year old can feature in as many as four positions. Although many have come to associate him as a left back, he however can feature as a defensive midfielder. He made a total of 20 appearances in central midfield for Ajax last season, 15 appearances at left back, with 3 appearances at central defence. With his versatility, this transfer situation can very well play into Arsene Wenger’s hand.
Although, due to his versatility, it is difficult to pin down a position for him, but judging by his 20 appearances for Ajax in defensive midfield last season, it means he can feature comfortably in that position. Although, he can still do a job at left back or as a left wing back as he showed in the World Cup in Brazil.
So far, reports of the 24 year old link to Arsenal come at a time the club has strongly been linked to Sami Khedira and Lars Bender. Both Germans have been linked all summer to Arsenal. With reports claiming that the former is apparently close to joining the German contingent at the Emirates.
Daley Blind is strong in the air, even at 5ft 11in, adept at passing the ball and his ball interception as well as blocking of the ball is on the high side. And his ability to hold on to the ball in tight situations makes him a good fit in the midfield position.
However, there is the question whether he is at the required quality to play for Arsenal. The defensive midfield position has been a position of several debates that has left many scratching their head at how opposition teams have waltz through Arsenal’s midfield. Daley Blind who is predominantly left footed may have been linked to Arsenal, but, it is doubtful that he is of the required level for Arsenal.
The position of defensive midfield is a key position, and securing an experience head in there is the key to the club’s fortunes in the coming season.
