The club’s search for a goalkeeper has heightened over the past few months following the departures of Lukas Fabianski on a free transfer to Swansea and the expiry of the loan of Emiliano Viviano, who did not kick a ball for the club during his one year loan spell. The issue with the goalkeeper situation at the club is centred on whether the club will look to bring in two goalkeepers or just one, while it look to promote from within the club’s academy.
The reports that have emerged however lead fact to both scenarios, over the past few weeks, several reports have linked Arsenal to different goalkeepers. These reports were centred on several goalkeepers like Iker Casillas. The report that has built up over the past few weeks has been that of Nice of France and Colombian goalkeeper, David Ospina who is said to be available for around £3.2 million.
Following his World Cup performance for Colombia, such a fee represents a distinctly low return for the Nice goalkeeper. Where doubt remain over his ability lies in his height (6ft) which for a Premier League goalkeeper is remarkably short when compared to Wojciech Szczesny who stands at (6ft 5in).
Further reports have however emerged over Arsenal’s interest in England and Norwich goalkeeper; John Ruddy. The report claims the goalkeeper is available for £7 million. At 27 and with Ospina at 25, it would mean that the club are in pursuit of two goalkeepers who are in their twenties.
The issue of the goalkeeping situation at Arsenal following the likely signing of more than two goalkeepers raises some questions in respect of the future of Damian Martinez (21), who spent most of last season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday. The question then is would Arsene Wenger bring in the two goalkeepers that will provide competition for the Polish first? Or would he choose to settle for bringing in just a goalkeeper that will serve as second choice that will make Martinez to end up as third choice?
Going by the inexperience, which the scenario of making Martinez as third choice, would cause across board, going by the fact that Wojciech Szczesny and other goalkeepers that have been linked, are on the young side. Arsene Wenger might look to bring in a goalkeeper with more experience as both second and third choice goalkeepers instead of making Damian Martinez the third choice.
Still time in the summer for all to know.
