The news of Arsenal’s search for an holding midfielder took a new turn few days ago when Portuguese daily O jogo claimed that Sporting Lisbon have turned down a bid of €30 million for their holding midfielder William Carvalho. But the interesting thing about the report is, it claims that the rejection of the bid is not based on the fact that the €30 million falls short of the €45 million in the player’s contract, but rather that the mode of payment insisted on my Arsenal does not sit well with the Portuguese team.
As a result of third party ownership, the Sporting Lisbon hierarchy wants a large part of the transfer fee to be paid upfront. What this means from an Arsenal point of view is that, a compromise can still be found on the grounds that the bid was not rejected out rightly. It further means both clubs can still reach an agreement by finding a common ground.
With the Sami Khedira transfer links having come to a stand still, following the denial and counter denial from his agent, the pursuit of the 22 year old William Carvalho represent a good opportunity for the club to bring in a player that is five years younger, and one who possess the physical attributes of contributing immensely to Arsenal’s fortunes. Added to that is the fact that, he will come in on smaller wage, as against the huge wages that Sami Khedira has been demanding according to reports.
The opportunity to bring in one of the rising stars of the game cannot be sniffed at by Arsenal. The other players that have been linked to the club, may be high profile than him in terms of where they play, but as last season was his breakthrough season following his loan spell in the Jupiler league in Belgium few things are known about him. However his influence on Sporting Lisbon’s season was reflected in the position they finished in the league. Finishing up second behind champions Benfica. He made a total of 29 league appearances last season.
It is not always that the sticking point of a transfer is how the fees will be paid. Arsenal fans are used to outright rejection of bids from other clubs, but with the Lisbon club reservation on the pattern of payment, it shows there is an high chance that this particular transfer can pull through, if as the reports reveal it confirms that Arsenal are interested in him. The bathed anticipation continues.
