When the curtains came down on last season, lots of players were linked to Arsenal. None more so than Toulouse and Ivorian right back Serge Aurier who was widely term as the direct replacement for the departed Bacary Sagna. The player himself took it upon himself to let the World know that he wanted to join Arsenal by doing his best impression of Gunnersaurus in social media, but despite several reports as to how close Arsenal were to signing him, from the words of the player himself, it seems the club was close to signing him.
The 21 year old confirmed what was widely reported at the time in an interview.
“There was an approach from Arsenal plus I wanted to go there, but it didn’t happen. I am very happy for Mathieu Debuchy.”
It would seem from the above statement that there was something actually brewing behind the rumours earlier in the summer. What could have informed Arsene Wenger’s change of mind after holding talks with the Ivorian?
Perhaps the opportunity to bring in a much more experience replacement in Mathieu Debuchy who is 28, and the much talked about Premier League experience that he comes with. Added to that is the relative similarities in age between Serge Aurier and Carl Jenkinson which is just eight months.
Or better still; the manager would think about the African Cup of Nations that comes up next year January which means that the Ivorian would have left Arsenal at an important part of the season a move that would have impacted negatively on his settling down at Arsenal.
Arsene Wenger is known to change his mind a lot about a particular target, and the Serge Aurier experience would not have come as a surprise to keen watchers of Arsenal, but the fact that the club heard talks with him meant that there was interest in him from the club. The only thing left was that, that interest did not follow through to something concrete. Besides, it a thing that clubs does during transfer window, talking to and approaching players. Such talks could either have be formal or informal enquiry depending on the circumstances in which it was arranged.
In all, the comments of the Ivorian for now means nothing in the grand scheme of things as Arsenal has brought in Mathieu Debuchy in his stead, and only Arsene Wenger knows why he didn’t pursue his interest further, as always he keeps his dealings close to his chest.
