As the link continues in terms of the goalkeeper that would come in to challenge Wojciech Szczesny at the helm at Arsenal, reports have emerged that Iker Casillas is demanding a wage of £135,000 a week to join the club. With report in the Spanish media previously claiming that the 33 year old wants a free transfer from the European Champions. It was reported that what was left was for terms for the goalkeeper to be trashed out.
It has become a transfer story that has not stopped developing over the past few weeks, with his constant links to Arsenal, this despite the fact that there are strong indications that the club is closing in on the signing of Colombian goalkeeper David Ospina.
With that in mind, seeing that the Colombian goalkeeper would not command the same wages that Iker Casillas would, it is likely that attention is firmly on the Nice of France goalkeeper. The wage demand of £135,000 would make him one of the top earners at the club. And going by his present form, such demand is based on his reputation and experience and not on his current form judging by his performances in the last two seasons.
The flames involving this particular speculation has taken different dimensions over the last few weeks. Which developed from the media in Madrid reporting that the Real Madrid legend wants out of Madrid following his largely peripheral role in the last two seasons, while it was also reported that Arsenal has made an offer for the 33 year old, whether that offer is what has led to the demand of the present £135,000 remains to be seen.
The goalkeeping situation at Arsenal needs a quick resolution though, as the new season kicks in very soon. With just Wojciech Szczesny and Damian Martinez as the only senior goalkeepers at the club, a setback in terms of injury to any of the two during pre-season would force the club hands in the transfer market. And the delay, in getting a deal done early doors means that any new goalkeeper would not have the opportunity of getting to build that understanding with other players especially the defence.
With the World Cup in Brazil having altered the way players would return to the club, it remains to be seen what comes of this particular development.
What is clear though is that, the club has set out to bring in goalkeeper, and the identity of which will not be clear until the transfer is confirmed.
