The summer for the Arsenal faithful has been different from what many would have experienced over the last few summers especially since the move to the Emirates Stadium, it has been summers of dashed expectations in the transfer market, but with the change in the financial situation of the club, the austerity years seem to be coming to an end.
The signing of Mesut Ozil last season for a club record £42 million signalled the intention of the club, as it broke away from the shackling years of austerity.
In a remarkable summer so far, Arsenal has made significant signings in both areas of adding to the squad in terms of Alexis Sanchez and as a replacement for a departed player in terms of Mathieu Debuchy.
However, from the fillers, it has not yet ended. As reports have emerged that the club is close to more signings as it works towards making announcement to that effect. The club could make as many as three signings this week.
The club has already confirmed the signing of David Ospina from Nice making it, it third signing of the summer. And it would be the first for the week as there are still plans to announce the signing of Calum Chambers from Southampton this week which would bring the number of the signings for the week to two.
The other signing that many fans would be anticipating for this week that leads to the Emirates Cup is the sealing of William Carvalho later this week. Although the club and Sporting Lisbon are still £10 million apart in the valuation of the player, as Arsenal hold forte for a price of £24, while the Lisbon club wants £34, the full fee of his buyout clause. Even with these differences, there are indications that both clubs are nearing a compromise as intermediaries are urging the Portuguese club to accept Arsenal’s offer because of their financial situation.
With the signing of David Ospina now confirmed, it a case of one down, two to go for the signing that Arsenal would announce this week. The interesting times awaits fans of the club as signings are made.
In the end the announcement of these signings would inevitably bring a buzz and a lift to the club especially the fans, but it is how these signings translates to success on the field that would determine how the season goes. But the fact that the signings are rolling in in the first place is a starting point to greater things for the season ahead for the club.
