Reports have emerged that Arsenal are targeting Juventus and Italian defender Angelo Ogbonna as it looks to strengthen is defence with uncertainty still trailing the future of Thomas Vermaelen.
The 26 year old defender of Nigerian heritage has spent just one season with the Italian Champions, but Juventus are willing to sell the defender as it look to raise funds to improve other parts of the squad. He had16 appearances in the league with a total of 22 appearances last season for Juventus as he featured sparingly.
Arsenal’s need for another centre half has been exacerbated by the uncertainty that revolves around the position going back to last season.
The club only had three centre halves last season in Per Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny, Thomas Vermaelen and make shift centre half Bacary Sagna who has left the club. The club got away with the lack of adequate cover at centre half last season because there were no long term injury in that position.
However, with Thomas Vermaelen almost likely to leave this summer after growing disillusioned by his modicum role last season, it means the club would have to bring in two centre halves as the third and fourth defenders.
The reports linking Arsenal to the Juventus defender say he would be available for £9.5 million is another pointer to the fact that the club intends to bring in more bodies into the defence. Though what is not clear is whether Arsene Wenger would be willing to spend that much on a backup defender.
In respect of spending sums, what is not clear is what Arsene Wenger’s intends to do with Calum Chambers when his signing is finally confirmed. The 19 year old played mostly as a right back last season, but there are claims he has featured as a centre half for England Under 19s, and his physique reveals that he has the potential to play as a centre half. However all assertions for now are just permutations as the intentions of Arsene Wenger in respect of the Saints defender will become clear when he is finally confirmed as a new signing.
The link of Angelo Ogbonna who has more than 10 caps for Italy has all the potential to adapt to the rigours of the Premier League because of his pace, energy, height and power, but as with every transfer stories, the reality of every speculation is revealed when the transfer window ends.
