Following Arsenal’s signing of 25 year old goalkeeper David Ospina, he becomes the first Colombian to play for Arsenal. His comment on the official website reflects that this has been well received in his home land. Asked how he felt to be the first Colombian to represent the club;
“Extremely proud, and I’m expecting to do very well so other Colombian players can also come here.”
On the basis of the fact that he could clear the path for other Colombians to play for Arsenal, we take a look at five other Colombian players that featured at the World Cup in Brazil that Arsenal could do with.
1. Jackson Martinez
The 27 year old Colombian striker has been linked to Arsenal through out this summer. And, in the past, he has expressed his desire to play for the Gunners. He has being a consistent goal scorer at Porto since he arrived Europe in 2012. The 6ft 3in striker scored 20 goals in 29 league appearances last season, and had 2 goals at the World Cup in Brazil, all scored in one match against Japan in group match. He has a £35 million buy-out clause in his contract.
2. Juan Cuadrado
The 26 year old Fiorentina winger is a utility player who can play in most positions across the field. He can play as a right back, in both wings and as a defensive midfielder. The fleet footed Colombian scored 13 goals and had 8 assist in 37 appearances for the Florence club last season. At the World Cup he had 1 goal, and a high of 4 assist in 5 matches.
3. Fred Guarin
The 28 year old central midfielder who can play in both attacking and defensive midfield has been the subject of previous links to Arsenal. He featured 3 times at the World Cup in Brazil with two starts. He scored 4 goals and 6 assist in 32 league matches last season.
4. Juan Quintero
The 21 year old Porto midfielder was part of the Colombian squad at the World Cup in Brazil, but he did not feature in any of the matches. He has also been the subject of a link to Arsenal this summer. The midfielder has drawn comparisons with Lionel Messi due to his style of play. He featured 18 times for Porto last season with one goal to show for his efforts.
5. Santiago Arias
The 22 year old PSV Eindhoven defender was ever present for the Dutch side last season featuring in 31 matches across all competitions with a goal and three assist to show for his efforts. He featured twice at the World Cup in Brazil with a start.
