Arsenal Given Encouragement To Sign High Rated Argentine

As Arsenal continues to strengthen key areas of it squad, players continues to be link to other areas of the squad that are in need of strengthening especially in defence. Reports from Spain claims Argentine defender Federico Fazio who plays for Sevilla is interesting Arsenal.

The 6ft 5in defender was part of the Sevilla squad that won the Europa league last season. Having featured 27 times in la liga last term, he is one of the priced assets at Sevilla, and plans are on to cash in on him so that other areas of the Sevilla squad can be strengthened according to reports from Spain. Already a replacement has been brought in Spanish defender Alejanro Arribas in anticipation of Fazio’s departure.

The Argentine defender has the potential to feature in several positions besides central defence. He can also play in midfield and as a left back. The defender was part of the Argentine Olympic football squad that won the Olympic gold in Beijing 2008.

The uncertain situation at the club in central defence would always open doors for players to be linked to the club, last season the club got away with having just three centre halves. In some cases, there was no centre defender on the bench when Thomas Vermaelen was out injured or when Laurent Koscielny did not feature.

The club is already in need two centre halves if Thomas Vermaelen leaves which is swelling this speculation linking defenders to the club.

Federico Fazio stands at the same height with Per Mertesacker, but with the advantage of having more pace which means he can add more aerial prowess to the team.

With the club’s established partnership of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny already pushing Thomas Vermaelen out of the club, it is not clear whether any defender who has been used to playing first team football would join the club to play as a backup defender which throws the interest of Federico Fazio in shape focus. The Argentine has been a key competent of the Sevilla team even though the club is open to selling him. Whether he chooses to swap the white of Seville for red of North London would be known as time goes on.

What is not in doubt though is that the club has to find a solution to the ills at central defence. With Arsene Wenger extending the break of the German contingent to August 12th, it would be interesting to see who pairs Laurent Koscielny at the centre of defence against Manchester City in the Charity Shield on August 11th.
