The position of centre half in Arsenal’s squad has been a topic of hot discussion amongst Arsenal faithful for sometime. Last season the club had just three centre halves in his squad (Thomas Vermaelen, Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny) with Bacary Sagna used as make shift centre half. The club got away with it last season as there was no long term injury in that area of the squad throughout the season as there was no time any of those players were all out injured at the same time last season.
However, with the uncertainty over Thomas Vermaelen’s future with just a year left in his contract, Arsenal’s need for a centre half couldn’t be more obvious for all to see.
However, it is the identity of the centre half that the club would look to bring in that has left many guessing.
Where Carl Jenkinson could come in
Already there are reports doing the rounds that Arsene Wenger would be sending Carl Jenkinson on loan for the up coming season, West Ham United are reported to be his destination for the loan spell. Hull City manager Steve Bruce revealed this fact by stating that he was destined for West Ham, after previously expressing that he was interested in signing Carl Jenkinson on loan.
Arsenal could through sending Carl Jenkinson on loan to West Ham request for West Ham defender Winston Reid. The 26 year old New Zealander has been a consistent performer for the Upton Park club, and has been a Premier League defender since he moved to East London in 2010.
He has previously been linked to Arsenal in the past, and a move for the 6ft 3in centre half would mean the club would be bringing in a defender with Premier League experience. He featured 22 times in the Premier League last season for West Ham last season, with 18 starts, after his season was disrupted with injuries.
In recent years, Arsene Wenger has bought few players from within the Premier League. However, some of the few he has bought has been a huge success ala Sol Campbell and Mikel Arteta. While same is expected from Mathieu Debuchy and Calum Chambers. Bringing in Winston Reid could just be a master stroke from Arsene Wenger as Carl Jenkinson moves the other way on loan.
Winston Reid is valued at around £4 million in the transfer market.
