Arsenal Could Sign Real Madrid Star – Reports

According to reports in the Spanish media, Arsenal are said to be interested in Real Madrid defender Alvaro Arbeloa. The 31 year old former Liverpool defender endured a difficult last season that was blighted by injuries. These reports stem from claims made by Madrid based sport dailies AS and Marca.

The claims that Arsene Wenger would be interested in the defender are quite astonishing as one, he is mostly a right back, who can also feature across the defence, and two Arsenal have already signed Mathieu Debuchy and Callum Chambers as right backs, which necessitated the loan of Carl Jenkinson to West Ham because of surplus age of right backs.

The former Anfield faithful is already on the wrong side of thirty and barely played last season featuring 18 times in La Liga with 14 starts. Interestingly he played 4 times as a left back last season, and 10 times as a right back in his 14 starts.

Standing at just 6ft, whether Arsene Wenger sees him as a gap in central defence remains to be seen.

The transfer window has thrown up several element of surprise this season ready, which makes every rumour to be watched carefully even though with an high dose of caution.

As it stands, Arsenal have Mathieu Debuchy and Callum Chambers as right backs, with Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal as left backs, while Chambers can play as a centre half, he leaves just Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker as the other centre halves with Thomas Vermaelen’s future still in doubt. Which raises the question of where he would play if the reports are true?

Arsene Wenger has previous alluded to the fact that he would only react in the transfer market when a player leaves in central defence which at present points to Thomas Vermaelen, presently that is the only place (centre half) that could need bodies in terms of replacement and addition.

Any link to the club in the area of the defence would point to the coming of a centre half because of the uncertainty there. But since the Real Madrid defender is more of a full back than a centre half, the reports linking him to the club has been dismissed as been spurious. Yet the mind of Arsene Wenger cannot be discerned when the window is open. Although, the financial situation of the club has changed, this is the same Arsene Wenger that brought him Mikael Silvestre from Manchester United, which means a complete dismissal of this report should be based with an eye on the past antecedent of le prof.
