Arsenal’s attention has shifted to Sporting Lisbon defensive midfielder William Carvalho in its continued quest to bring in a defensive midfielder, a scenario that has seen several players linked to the club. The Portuguese daily O JOGO who broke the initial interest last month are now reporting that Arsenal and Sporting Lisbon are close to agreeing a deal of €30 million (£24 million) for the 22 year old.
The Portuguese club have earlier turn down Arsenal’s bid of £24 million last month despite the player’s release clause of £34 million, outlining the fact that, they want the transfer fee paid off front because of a third party owner that is expected to receive some part of the fee gotten from the sales of the player.
The new development counts as a huge plus for Arsenal as negotiations continues between both clubs to see if they can iron out an agreement for the player. It is believed that the player is keen to move after turning down the chance for his contract to be improved, the club are in debt, and have earlier stated that they can do without William Carvalho “It’s not like the old days when players left Sporting at any price.
“We are not concerned with William Carvalho because we have alternatives who will want to play as well.”Augusto Ignacio sporting director of Sporting Lisbon
Which is why they are keen to sell and Arsenal being interested makes for an interesting situation in the coming weeks.
Last season was William Carvalho’s breakthrough season for the Lisbon club having spent the previous season on loan in Belgium. He was instrumental to the club finishing in second place last season, a jump of 5 positions from 7th position the season before. He featured 29 times in the Portugal’s Liga Sagres. With his physical attributes, he would fit the bill in the Premier League for Arsenal.
As both clubs’ continue their negotiations, there are indications that an agreement could be reached before the end of the transfer window, as Arsene Wenger look to complete his transfer activities for the summer.
The 22 year old could be the difference between a successful season and a near successful on, as he comes with all the attributes that were present in a certain Gilberto Silva when he was signed in the summer of 2002. William Carvalho can become that missing link in Arsenal’s midfield since the Brazilian left, but both clubs have to come to a compromise before any transfer can happen.
