It is common knowledge that Arsenal have beaten Manchester city to the signing of highly rated Borussia Monchengladbach and Switzerland international midfielder Granit Xhaka. The player reportedly flew into London last Saturday to undergo his medical with the club.
He passed the medical and also did his photoshot then flew out to team up with his national team mates ahead of the European Championship. It was expected that Arsenal will announce the deal last Monday, but in their usual fashion, there is no official confirmation from the club.
However, according to highly reliable journalist John Cross, the club will officially announce the deal later today. The club is said not to be happy that the photos from the photo shot was leaked hence the delay. Hopefully the club won’t push forward the announcement date again.
Xhaka will be expected to fight for a first team shirt with Coquelin for the defensive midfield role. His signing will mean we won’t have to rely on only erratic Francis Coquelin. It will be interesting to see who wins the race for the regular first team shirt but despite Xhaka’s price tag which makes it unlikely that he will be coming to be second choice, Coquelin has a good chance of making the first team shirt his.
Xhaka will need time to bed in while Coquelin is already used to the team. Plus Coquelin will have pre-season with the club while Xhaka won’t due to his appearance at the European Championship.
