With the gradual ageing of Nacho Monreal and the inconsistent form of understudy Kieran Gibbs, Arsene Wenger is targeting French Ligue 1 and Lille left back Djibril Sidibe according to reports from Spain.
Wenger had tried in vain to sign Leicester City’s wonder kid left back Ben Chilwell which appears to be off judging by reports . The Arsenal manager has decided to scout the French League which has been a familiar teritory for him having signed Sylvain Wiltord, Robert Pires, Abou Diaby and Yaya Sanogo from there in the past.
Gibbs was the understudy to Gael Clinchy before his exit to Manchester City and was expected to step in and fill the void left by the French man the same way Clichy understudied and replaced Ashley Cole in 2006 when he left for Chelsea. That did not work as planned prompting Wenger to sign Spaniard Nacho Monreal from Malaga. Gibbs
is expected to leave the club in the summer making the imminent signing of Sidibe realistic.
According to Fichajes (Spanish Publication), Djibril Sidibe 23, appears to be Wenger’s main target after starting 36 of Lille’s 38 Ligue 1 games last season. The defender can also play as a right back which is an added advantage considering his versatility . Sidibe scored six goals and provided a further three assists last season which is an impressive stat for a defender.
The signing of Sidibe though will not come cheap as West Ham are also in the running. The French club value the left back at £11 million which is a bargain considering the already highly inflated European transfer market.
