After announcing the signing of Granit Xhaka, Arsenal, according to ESPN, are now set to pay Wolfsburg left-back Ricardo Rodriguez’s €25m release clause.
The clause can only be activated by the end of June, and Arsene Wenger’s side are now favourites to acquire the services of the Swiss international ahead of Spanish giants, Real Madrid Sporting director of Wolfsburg, Klaus Allofs has reluctantly admitted that there’s nothing his club can do to stop the transfer of the player.
“Those are things we can’t influence,” he said, amidst news of an imminent Gunners bid. Even though Arsenal already have Nacho Monreal and Kieran Gibbs fighting over the left-back position, they look set to strengthen it even further with Rodriguez.
With a price tag of €25m (around £19m), Liverpool should be in contention as competition is required to improve on Alberto Moreno at left-back. But according to the Daily Star, Liverpool have chose to sign Leicester City teenager Ben Chilwell instead, who they’re reportedly close to getting. And although Chilwell’s talented, Rodriguez is a finished product and would have immediate impact on a team.
Arsenal seem to have made all the moves Liverpool should have made this summer. Liverpool need an attacking midfielder and a left-back and Arsenal have signed Xhaka and are now favourites to get Rodriguez. Seems Arsenal have beaten Liverpool to both.
This can be understandable if looking at Klopp’s history of unothordox transfers. He rarely goes for big names. Instead, he goes for young players with the right attitude and the capacity to improve.
