Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen is likely to be a departer of the club as he remains linked with a summer move away from the Spanish giants with Premier League clubs Liverpool and West Ham rumoured to be interested in the Belgian professional.
Vermaelen who has had a sour time at Barcelona as a result of his injury woes has been noted by Sport to be one of the “big disappointments” in Catalonia since his shock move from Arsenal in 2014.
Following the reported interests of Liverpool, West Ham and Portuguese Champions, Benefica, Thomas Vermaelen’s future seems to lie elsewhere. The 28 year old’s contract with Barcelona endures till 2019 and he has a release clause of 80million pounds. However, it appears the Spanish Champions if willing to sell him in a time like this would have to sell lower than the 19million pounds they paid for him.
Vermaelen whose defensive abilities have been seen in the Premier League at the Emirates and who was a revelation after a phenomenal debut season 2009/10 only managed to play once in his first season at Barcelona as the club won a treble.
Even as the futures of Liverpool defenders, Martin Skrtel, Kolo Toure and Mamadou Sakho remain uncertain, Liverpool are no doubt in need of a top class defender and even the signing of Joel Matip from Schalke would not be enough.
On the other hand, West Ham are looking to increase their squad depth as they contest in the Europa league next season and infact push for a top four finish which eluded them last season.
