Gazzetta dello Sport has reported that Arsenal have enquired verbally about the availability of Inter Milan and Colombian defender Jeison Murillo who had an impressive season at the San Siro since moving to Inter from Udinese last season.
Arsenal have tried to agree with Inter on a £15 million deal which has been flatly rejected by the Italian club despite the fact that the defender’s representatives have agreed on a personal deal with Arsenal. Roberto Mancini who is a known admirer of Murillo has made it clear several times that he would be devastated if the
Colombian leaves this summer.
Murillo still has four years to run on his contract and has courted attention, with the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and Juventus all linked with him this summer.
Arsene Wenger sees Murillo has a long term partner of French man and soon to be announced club captain Laurent Koscielny, although the French man is likely to miss the first month of the Premier League season due to a time off which would be given to him to enable him rest after the European Tournament in his home country.
Murillo is currently with Colombia in the Copa America in The USA (Colombia advanced to the semi-final after beating Peru on penalty) and was also part of an Inter Milan team who under Roberto Mancini formed an impressive defensive unit which was the second best in the Italian Seria A conceding only 36 goals in 38 league games.
Murillo is considered an upgrade on Per Mertesacker (slow and advanced in age) and Gabriel Paulista who has failed to grow and live up to his tag as one of La Liga’s finest before his signing in 2015.
