In a news that could have a very devastating effect on Theo Walcott’s career as an Arsenal player, Arsenal are said to have triggered the 30 million release clause of Riyad Mahrez. According to the reports, Arsenal and Mahrez have been in talks for several weeks and only yesterday the Gunners having been sure that the African is not trying to use the club to get a new contract from Leicester triggered his release clause.
Personal terms is said to have been agreed with the player weeks ago and Arsenal have only waited till now to be sure they are not been used before agreeing to pay his release clause. He reportedly have been offered a 5-year contract which will see him earn as much as £120,000 a week.
This news if true means one of two things. It is either Wenger sees Walcott as a back up striker to Giroud or whoever is coming in or Walcott will be sold or sent out on loan. The former Southampton player has already been linked with a return back to St Mary’s stadium and West Ham, Leicester ( probably as a replacement for Mahrez ) and Liverpool have all been linked with the signing of Theo.
And should he leave, I doubt there will be many Arsenal fans who will be angry. He simply hasn’t developed the way we wanted and there is no point paying him £140,000 a week only to have him at the club as a mere back up. And with the emergence of Alex Iwobi, he is certainly not needed, even as a back up.
