ARSENAL are willing to bid £26m to sign Jose Gimenez, a figure that falls well short of Atletico Madrid’s asking price.
The Gunners are said to be interested in a summer move for the Uruguayan defender, who has been heavily linked with Manchester United in recent weeks.
Spanish outlet Don Balon claim Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is a fan of Gimenez and wants him to bolster his defensive ranks.
The reports claim Wenger is in the market for another centre-back because of his doubts over Brazilian Gabriel Paulista.
Don Balon report that Wenger is ready to offer Atletico £26m for their star but that amount is nowhere near his £56m buyout clause.
Jose Mourinho’s United are also said to be keeping tabs on Gimenez.
And they are willing to bid up to £50m for the 21-year-old, The Mirror claimed recently.
That could set up an intriguing transfer head-to-head between the two Premier League giants.
Gimenez, who joined Atletico for just £800,000 from Uruguayan side Danubio in 2013, has endured a frustrating start to the new campaign.
He has been a regular under Diego Simeone over the past two seasons but made just two appearances so far this term after picking up an injury in late September.
Gimenez has scored three goals in 21 caps for Uruguay.
