Barcelona have joined Arsenal in the race to sign Schalke 04 midfielder Leon Goretzka, as per reports.
Goretzka has been continually linked with Arsenal since the end of the previous season but nothing genuine has materialized. It was widely expected that Arsenal would step up its pursuit of the midfielder after the confederations Cup but Schalke has managed to wade off potential suitors.
Barcelona are now set to join Arsenal in the race to acquire the midfielder’s signature.
According to the Mirror, Barcelona representatives were present at Schalke’s game against Leipzig a few days ago to observe the German in action.
Valued at £21m, Goretzka will represent a more affordable alternative to Jean-Michel Seri who has also been linked with both Arsenal and Barcelona.
Goretzka’s contract at Schalke will be due at the end of next season, meaning he could leave for free next year if he doesn’t extend his deal with the club.
The midfielder was impressive for Schalke last campaign and impressed Arsenal scouts who watched him on several occasions. It appears he has impressed Barcelona chiefs also to the extent that they are now ready to make a move for him. Wenger will now have to get busy if he wants to sign the 22 year old.
