Tottenham Hotspur have lost Christian Eriksen in a transfer to Internazionale for a mere £17 million, it has been confirmed.
The 27-year-old had been angry at the club’s refusal to sell him to Real Madrid over the summer. Having fallen out with the club, Eriksen went on to make only 10 starts in 24 Premier League games this season.
Eriksen’s absence and Spurs’ defeat in the Champions League final has left them performing far short of last season.
Whilst one star player has left the club, Tottenham have also announced the permanent signing of Giovani Lo Celso on a permanent basis, for a reported £27 million. So Spurs have made a £10 million loss on Tuesday, and have signed a player who has yet to be involved in a single Premier League goal in his 14 appearances. In fact, between Mauricio Pochettino and Jose Mourinho this season, the 23-year-old has made just four league starts.
This seems like a desperate move by our rivals and a damaging blow. They are already six points outside of the Champions League places. Having qualified for Europe’s elite club cup competition for each of the past three seasons, one has to think other star players will demand a move away from the club if they fail to qualify for next season’s competition. Without Champions League football, what is the attraction for playing for Spurs? There is none.
Christian Eriksen had been at Tottenham since joining from Ajax in the summer of 2013. He has been one of the top players in the Premier League ever since, and had been a regular in their starting lineup prior to this season.
Fingers crossed that the likes of Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Jan Vertonghen are as fortunate as Christian Eriksen, and get a move away from Spurs over the summer!
