An own goal from Christian Fuchs and another late goal from Eddie Nketiah saw Arsenal successfully book our passage into the fourth round of this season’s EFL Cup on Wednesday night.
Mikel Arteta named Bernd Leno, David Luiz, Rob Holding and Bukayo Saka in an otherwise greatly rotated side for the trip to Leicester City, who changed their starting XI entirely from their 4-2 win over Burnley in the Premier League on Sunday.
Reiss Nelson produced the first meaningful attempt of the game in the first half with his 25-yard effort well tipped over the bar by Leicester goalkeeper Danny Ward.
Bernd Leno had to be alert at the other end to deny Kelechi Iheanacho one-on-one after an excellent curling through ball from Marc Albrighton from down the right wing. The striker’s run caught out a napping David Luiz.
James Maddison saw a 20-yard effort come back off the inside of our post with Leno well-beaten as the home side edged the first half.
The breakthrough came 12 minutes after the break through some excellent work from Nicolas Pepe. The winger got beyond Luke Thomas in the penalty area and his attempted cross from out wide parried by Ward. Pepe then hit the post on his follow up and deflect in off Fuchs.
Eddie Nketiah later saw an effort headed off the line after chipping the ball over Danny Ward before the young striker sealed the game from close range in the final minute after an excellent assist from substitute Hector Bellerin.
