Manchester City were frustrated in their efforts to acquire the services of long-term target Alexis Sanchez as Arsenal cancelled deal late in the day after failing to sign Monaco midfielder Thomas Lemar.
City had offered £55 million plus £5 million in bonus, a £m improvement on their first bid for the Chilean, and Press Association Sport suggested Arsenal were ready to approve the bid provided they could find replacement in time.
However, Arsenal reportedly agreed a £92m deal for Lemar, for whom Monaco had already rejected two bids from Liverpool, but the midfielder playing for France in a World Cup qualifier against Holland on Thursday night, it soon became clear there was no time to complete the formalities, especially with the player preferring a move to Anfield.
That left Arsenal with no option but to back out of the agreement with City, who had been monitoring Sanchez all summer as the player entered the final year of his contract at the Emirates despite Gunners boss Arsene Wenger consistently maintaining the player is not for sale.
