Napoli are reportedly eager to take Johan Djourou to Serie A. The Italian side are ready to offer Arsenal’s 25-year old Swiss international the regular football he craves. The two clubs have already held discussions, according to Tuttosport in Italy.
Djourou has slipped down the pecking order in the centre of Arsenal’s defence. He is now fourth choice after Vermaelen, Koscielny and Mertesacker, but can also play as a defensive midfielder. His versatility can be very useful to Arsenal and that is why Arsene Wenger extended his contract until 2015 earlier this year.
If Arsenal do sell the player, they want to receive close to their valuation of £6 million. Djourou, despite being happy and settled at Arsenal, may be acceptable to a move after he was told that his international career could suffer due to lack of play.
Wenger has assured the player that he is rotating him in order to avoid a repeat of the injury that sidelined Djourou throughout the 2009-2010 season. If he is sold then Arsenal will be a little short of cover, depending on what other signings Wenger can complete this summer.
Vertonghen is now certain to be a Tottenham player after Ajax and Spurs have worked out their differences, so there is no chance of that one being hijacked, but Arsenal definitely need more not less strength in their despensive spine.
