He’s Ivorian, he’s a striker, he’s a free agent this summer and Arsenal want to sign him. Alas, it is not 34-year old goal machine Didier Drogba, so often the scourge of Arsenal defenders past and present that has caught the eye of Arsene Wenger, but his not-so-often scoring apprentice Salomon Kalou that has sparked interest in North London.
Wenger has been an admirer of Kalou for a few seasons now, but despite his fringe role at London rivals Chelsea, the Blues were never really going to sell the Ivorian to one of their rivals. Now with his contract running down and a new offer seemingly no longer in the pipeline, Kalou is available for free, and according to CaughtOffside, Arsenal still want him.
The 26-year old would work well in Arsenal’s 4-2-3-1 system, being able to play anywhere in the front three, especially in the problem position out left. However, with FC Schalke having stolen the march on signing the free agent, Arsene Wenger will need to move fast if he is to persuade the former Feyenoord man to stay behind in the Premier League. A stumbling block could be Kalou’s wage demands and the fact that Champions League bound Schalke can offer him a regular starting berth. Something he would have to earn at Arsenal.
